Golf bags have no influence whatsoever on the result of the game, however, they can greatly affect the players game by way of offering comfort as the player makes his round through the course. 

As to how much load in your gear you are carrying and if you are carrying the bag by yourself or using a golf cart or the help of a caddie, can help you decide which bag is for you.

When planning on riding the golf cart on your rounds, then whether the bag is heavy or not does not matter. But if your plan is to walk, then a lighter bag that will be carried along easily is essential.

Types of golf bags:

1.    Staff bags.  These are the largest types of golf bags. They can accommodate a complete fourteen set of golf clubs and typically have many side pockets for other golf tools and equipment that one wishes to take along. Almost all professional golfers prefer the staff bags as they can hold a lot of equipment and since their caddy carries the bag for them, weight is never a problem.

A good staff bag is one made of quality leather or materials that are of high quality and are expensive. 
  
2.    Cart Bags.  Are a lot smaller in size compared to staff bags, but are comparatively bulky and unmanageable for the golfer alone, without the caddy’s help. These bags are constructed for use on golf carts; they have lesser pockets and storage capacity.

3.    Carry Bags.  The smallest type, and are basically made from plastic, nylon and other materials. As these bags are constructed to accommodate the essentials such as the golf clubs, a few small golf accessories and balls they are the right choice for the golfer who favors to carry his own bag.

Choosing the right bag for you

1.    Take into account the price and your budget.  How much you can afford can determine what kind of bag as well as what materials they are made of; the more expensive it is, the more complex the features of the bag.  Keep in mind however, that the bag is not used directly in your game; golf shoes, clubs and balls are more significant than the bag.

2.    Features.  Know what type of features you need in your bag and what equipment you need to put in the bag.  You might consider a bag that can stand alone to make it easier to take out your golf clubs during your game. You might also consider bringing an umbrella along, so you need a bag with a slot for your umbrella. However, if you are the type to carry only the basic gears, then you might want to consider a simple and light bag that can accommodate just the basics.

By putting all of your clubs into the golf bag, it is highly unlikely that you have filled it all the way up. There will be more room in the various compartments and pockets that decorate the outside of the bag. You should not leave these empty. Instead, fill them up with anything you could need out on the course. Put an extra water bottle in one of the pockets for when you get thirsty. Put a first aid kit in another pocket just in case something should happen. You should also include all of the obvious choices if you didn’t already – golf balls in large quantities, tees, and any other items you frequently use when golfing.

Once you have all of the practical accessories for golf bags taken care of, you can start to get into the more “fun” novelty items. There is no shortage of things you can attach to your golf club, whether it’s to get a laugh from your friends or simply to remind you of something. Little plush keychain-like items can be attached at many points all across the golf bag. This could be a small stuffed golf ball, or some sort of figurine. If there is something that you would like to have, it should come to mind immediately. You shouldn’t have to strain yourself to think of something to decorate your golf bag with.

If you want an easy way to identify your golf bag, you can have your name attached to it somehow. This could be in the form of some sort of embroidery project (do you have a girlfriend, wife, or daughter who embroiders as a hobby? Maybe it’s time to ask for a favor) or simply some scribbles with a sharpie. It doesn’t matter how you get it done, but it’s very important that you have some indication that the golf bag is yours in the event that it gets lost on the golf course. When someone recognizes your name and returns your expensive clubs, you will be glad that you put the name on the bag.

There is no limit to the ways that you can personalize your golf bag with accessories. However, the keyword here is “personalize”. If you are taking all of your ideas from something you read on the internet, then that isn’t very personal, is it? All I can do is offer you a few hints to get you started in the right direction, and from there you can decide on what exactly defines you as a person and what can help you out while you are golfing.

Generally speaking, you need a bag just large enough to hold your clubs, extra balls, your glove, tees, car keys, extra pencils, ball markers, a ball retriever, sunscreen, a windbreaker and a large umbrella.

It is also a good idea to have a packet of tissues, a band-aid or two, and if you play courses where insects are a problem, a can of bug repellent comes in very handy.

A small pack of baby wipes come in very handy; in your bag they get warmed by the heat, so when you get sweaty or a sand trap covered you with sand, a nice warm wipe can be very refreshing.

I happen to be allergic to bees, hornets and wasps, so my Epipen is an important addition to my bag. I am also hypoglycemic so I carry Lifesavers, which has to be replaced several times throughout the year because they tend to melt.

One item that doesn’t need to be in your golf bag is your cell phone. If you must carry it, turn off the ringer as a courtesy to other players. If you must use it, be aware of others who might be taking a swing or putting their ball. Be considerate!

Having these items in your golf bag should provide everything you will need, even in a minor emergency (like a blister) or a major inconvenience, like a sudden rainstorm. Being prepared makes the game a great deal more fun.

It is considered a necessity. A good golf bag will lessen your worries on the golf course, (i.e. all your clubs are in their proper place) and you can focus on your teeing.

If you’re a beginner golfer, then golf bags are definitely a must. However, there are things that you should know before going to the nearest golf store and buying a golf bag on impulse. First, there are two types of golf bags? carry bags and cart bags.

Carry bags are golf bags that are used when you are planning to have a lot of walking on the golf course. Cart golf bags are those that you use when walking is not possible (as some golf courses prohibit walking), and riding a golf cart is your option. A beginner golfer will most definitely buy a walking bag at first, although if you are a serious beginner of the game, then you will eventually buy both types of golf bags.

If you are a newbie in the game, you might ask "What is a golf bag for? I only have four golf clubs." A golf bag is a functional equipment rather than a fashion statement. It is not just for your golf clubs, but it can also hold your other golf equipment and accessories. Some advanced golf bags even have pocket coolers that can keep your drink ice-cold even for hours! You might want to consider that, especially when you will buy a carry golf bag.

When buying a golf bag, especially a carry golf bag, find a comfortable one. One should check the straps to see if it fits comfortably and whether it can be carried easily. Remember that your golf bag will be one of your trusted companions on the greens, and that you will spend hours with it. So choose wisely. Don’t buy low quality bags, because you will end up purchasing another bag in the next few months if your old golf bag tears up. You should also buy your golf bag depending on the number of golf clubs that you have. Most golf bags can carry up to 15 golf clubs. A tournament however limits the number of golf clubs in your golf bag.

Another important thing to consider when purchasing a golf bag is its weight. This is one of the most important things to know. Golf bags should be light enough to be carried or carted easily, but sturdy enough to hold your clubs and protect them. Some golf bags are even water resistant, and are rain proofed for the protection of your clubs. Most of these golf bags have 8 or 9 dividers or pockets. Again, the number of dividers that you will need depend on the amount of clubs and accessories you will carry.

If you have many golf clubs then choose a golf bag with many dividers. However, these types of golf bags have the tendency to be heavier. Some bags can weigh less than 5 pounds! These types of bags are made up of space-age materials such as graphite, however, they more expensive.

Remember that when buying golf bags, the lighter it is, the better and more comfortable it will be.
