Simple Rules of Golf Etiquette

Every sport has their unspoken rules. They are there to make the game fun for everyone playing.  Whether it be for safety or respecting other players, it is best to know them before playing the game with other experienced players.  Golf has always been known for its high standards and general respect for each other.  Golf etiquette is expected when playing with club members or players that have been around this game for a long time. So, before you set out on the fairway read the following rules to golf etiquette.

Most of golf etiquette is there to ensure the safety of each player.  Possibly the most important and most obvious rule to the game is to make sure that no one, player or spectator, is in the way of your shot.  The average professional golfer can hit a ball at 100 mph. The world record for golf ball speed is 204 mph. That being said, anything going 100 mph can really do some serious damage.

When someone is preparing to take a shot, make sure you stand behind them.  Even standing a few feet in front and to the side can put you into the line of fire.  A golf ball has been known to fly off in improbable directions so you don’t want to be in the way and that close.  Also, while someone is taking their shot, you should not talk or move and fidget in their eyesight.  Hearing someone talk or seeing them move around from the corner of your eye can distract you and mess up your concentration.

You’re bound to find other groups playing in the same golf course.  If there is another group in front of you, make sure you wait until the entire group has hit their second shot and is out of the way before your group starts.  If it is a short course, then you should wait until they have moved on to the next hole before your group starts.  Should you or another player in your group happen to hit a ball while others are still in range, make sure you yell “Fore” to warn them to try and take cover.

Be respectful of each other’s turn when playing.  Do not go out of turn and make the other players in your group feel disrespected. The player whose ball is the furthest back gets to hit their next shot first.  This ensures that you don’t leave any player behind. The player who won the previous hole has the honor of going first in the next hole.

When reaching the green, make sure you respect the surface.  No one wants their ball to get thrown off course because someone else before you left marks on the surface. Get in the habit of checking for marks and repairing them before and after your group is finished.  Lay your bags and clubs gently on the green so you do not mess it up. Once everything is set, once again do not get in the way of other peoples ball.

These are common sense to other players so they might not tell you these etiquette rules unless you ask.  Be courteous when playing, otherwise, you might have another club member come up to you and tell you of their displeasure.  When playing in a new club, make sure to check if they have any dress codes or additional rules.  Many people are passionate about keeping golf fair and having its standards honored by each player.
