How I Chip Like a Golf Pro – In 2 Easy Steps

By Jerry J. Jansen On July 1, 2009 Under Golf

One of the most difficult shots rookie golfers have to play is the one from about seven yards from the flag. If you are off the green, it might not always be possible or desirable to play the putter from this position. I ask myself how often would I expect to have the ball finish within 12 inches of the cup from this range. Not many I can tell you, because I am not a professional golfer.

However, there is a way to play these delicate little chip shots just like a pro.

Here is how to play them.

You can use any choice of club, within the range of a pitching wedge through to an 8 iron.

1. Address the ball as you would a putt and use your putting grip to play this shot. Choke down on the grip for more control.

2. Have the hands slightly ahead of the ball, and play the shot as you would your putter, that is with the hands and arms, keeping the hands in front of the ball through the shot.

Playing the chip shot this way with the hands and arms, gives you the advantage of playing it consistently, because of the lack of wrist action involved in the shot. You will also develop a feel for distances, which is very important with this type of golf shot, and it is one to practice regularly as it can save you many wasted shots in a round of golf.

It’s best to experiment with the shot, as it might feel strange at first, and try to find out what works best for you.
